2023 LDC Amendments – Bicycle Parking and Amenities
The proposal adds bicycle parking and amenity requirements to recognize and promote cycling as a viable means of transportation and recreation for residents, consumers, visitors, and employees. The proposed requirements include provisions for short-term bicycle parking, long-term bicycle parking, and amenities.
Short-Term Bicycle Parking
Short-term bicycle parking facilities are primarily intended to meet the needs of customers and visitors. The proposed LDC amendments would require visible and conveniently located bike racks for most new developments and existing buildings when undergoing major changes and renovations.
Long-Term Bicycle Parking
Long-term bicycle parking facilities are primarily intended to meet the needs of employees and residents. The proposal would require secure, weather-protected bicycle parking in new mixed-use, commercial, or multi-unit residential buildings.
Other Amenities
Under the proposed rules, very large developments would also have to include showers and clothes lockers for use by employees. This type of amenity is particularly useful for longer-distance bicycle commuters but may also be helpful for others as well.
See Section 703.L of the markup document for details on the proposed bike parking standards.
