Annual Meeting: April 9, 2024
The City and EWSD Annual election is Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 7 am to 7 pm at the Champlain Valley Exposition in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion, 105 Pearl Street, Essex Junction. Register to vote online at https://olvr.vermont.gov/ or stop by the City Offices at 2 Lincoln Street. The City Council has voted to mail ballots to all active voters so you do not need to call to request an absentee ballot.To check the status of your absentee/early ballot go to https://mvp.vermont.gov/. Nominating Petitions for Annual City Election
Nominating petitions for the 2024 Annual Meeting are now available at the City Office, 2 Lincoln Street. Officers to be elected include:
- Moderator (one-year term),
- Two City Council Members (three-year terms), and
- Two Library Trustees (one five-year term and one three-year term)
To have a name placed on the ballot, candidates are required to submit a petition containing at least 30 valid signatures and a consent of candidate form to the City Clerk. Both forms are available at the City Offices or by contacting the City Clerk at (802) 878-6944, option #7, or by email at clerks@essexjunction.org. The deadline for submittal of both forms is March 4, 2024 (the sixth Monday preceding the date of election 17 VSA §2681(a)(1)(A). Voting for candidates will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Voter-Backed Petitions
February 22, 2024, is the last day for voters to file a petition with the city clerk to have an article appear on the ballot. 17 V.S.A. 2642(a)(3)(A) (47 days prior to annual meeting). A petition must contain signatures from at least 5% of registered voters in the municipality. Call the City Clerk's office at 802-878-6944, option 7, for questions about the voter-backed petitions.
Presidential Primary and CWD Bond: March 5, 2024
The Presidential Primary and Champlain Water District Bond vote is Tuesday, March 5, 2024, from 7 am to 7 pm at the Champlain Valley Exposition in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion, 105 Pearl Street, Essex Junction. Register to vote online at https://olvr.vermont.gov/ or stop by the City Offices at 2 Lincoln Street. You may also request an absentee ballot at https://mvp.vermont.gov/ (My Voter Page), by phone at (802) 878-6944, option #7, or by email at clerks@essexjunction.org. Voters requesting ballots for the Presidential primary must request for a specific party, either Democratic or Republican. Early voting is available now through March 1, 2024.
Taxes Due March 15, 2024
2023-2024 Property tax bills were mailed to property owners in August 2023. The first installment was paid in September 2023, and the second installment must be paid by March 15, 2024. Payments will be accepted anytime but must be paid or postmarked by the due dates to avoid an 8% penalty.
Checks should be made payable to the "City of Essex Junction" and may be paid in person at the City Office (2 Lincoln Street) or left in the payment drop box (please include the stub with your payment to provide us with the correct account number). The city office is open to the public and is accepting in-person payments. To request a receipt, please email clerks@essexjunction.org.
Credit and debit cards are accepted at the City Office (2 Lincoln Street), by phone at 888-877-0450, or on our online payment system. Convenience fees will be charged (2.65%, $3.95 minimum). There is also an E-check option available. Paying by E-check includes a flat $1.95 convenience fee.
Dog Licenses
Residents may register dogs in person during normal business hours at the City Office, 2 Lincoln Street. All dogs over six months of age are required to be registered with the City Clerk by April 1st of each year per state statute. Renewals or purchase a first-time license by April 1, 2024, and SAVE MONEY! Before April 1, 2024, the cost is $9 for spayed/neutered and $13 for unaltered up to 4/1/2024. The cost increases to $11 for spayed/neutered and $17 for unaltered after April 1, 2024.
