The Village Community Development Department will be sending out periodic information to help residents learn more about the planning and permitting process. Today, we wanted to share information about accessory apartments (aka mother-in-law apartments). Accessory apartments are allowed in all residential zoning districts in the Village, and help to both increase housing stock and provide homeowners with an additional source of income. Accessory apartments are only permitted in owner-occupied homes. One or two renters can live in each accessory apartment. The accessory apartment can take up to 30% of the existing residential square footage of the primary home.
Permits are required for accessory apartments, so please call the friendly Community Development Staff at 878-6950 if this is something you are interested in learning more about, the full regulations for accessory apartments beginning on page 159 of the Village Land Development Code.
