Interview with Yvonne Wolfer & Joni Whitehouse, Cosmetology Instructor & Lab Supervisor
Do you like going to the salon but are not a huge fan of the hefty price tag involved? The Cosmetology Program at the Center for Technology Essex (CTE) is the answer for you! This program offers a salon where senior high school students and adult learners aspiring to be licensed cosmetologists have a chance to develop their skills and work their magic on the general public. The salon offers nearly every service that can be found at a traditional salon, including pedicures, perms, blowouts, and facials.
Yvonne and Joni work to develop a strong commitment to giving back in their students. Haircuts and manicures are free for all clients with the donation of a non-perishable food item. This year, students will be volunteering their time at the Heavenly Pantry Food Shelf to better understand the direct impact of their donations.
The program has an immeasurable impact on the students who choose to continue their education. Yvonne noted that roughly 2/3 of the students decide to take the state board exam and become a certified cosmetologist after the completion of the program. Not only does it allow the students to jump directly into a career path right after high school, but it also provides significant tuition savings from private cosmetology programs. Here is what one former student had to say about her experiences in the Cosmetology Program, “This program has changed my life in so many ways, I am so lucky to have this program with all of the wonderful instructors who have been there for me no matter what I go through. I can't imagine being anywhere else. I appreciate everything this program has given me, and I am very grateful.”
The CTE Cosmetology Program is located at 2 Educational Drive, in the same building as the ice rink. Make sure to check out the salon’s website for specific daily hours or give the salon a ring at 857-7454 to schedule an appointment.
