The Tree Advisory Committee (TAC) is excited to announce the winners of its annual Greatest Tree Contest, recognizing the most remarkable trees in our community. After carefully evaluating 14 nominations, the TAC unveiled the winners at its monthly meeting on October 29, 2024.
First-place honors went to a Freeman’s Maple tree located at 6 School Street, nominated by Hugh Gibson. This majestic tree is celebrated for its vibrant foliage and personal connection to the family, earning it the City’s 2024 Greatest Tree title.
The second-place winner is a Red Oak tree located at 12 Hillcrest Road, nominated by Tim Kemerer. Its age, estimated to be over 150 years old, and size make it a standout in the neighborhood.
In third place is a Sugar Maple tree located at 5 Summit Street, nominated by Beth Paul. This tree is a “grandfather” tree and is one of the original maples that once lined the street in the 1920s. It is also a cherished class tree for Summit Elementary students.
Each winning tree has been recognized not only for its beauty but also for its importance in enhancing our community’s environment. The first-place winner received a $100 prize, while the runners-up were awarded $50 each, generously donated by Northfield Savings Bank.
“The Greatest Tree Contest continues to inspire our residents to connect with and appreciate the natural beauty around us,” said Rich Boyers, Tree Advisory Committee member and contest organizer. “We are thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation and hope to encourage even more nominations next year.”
This exciting initiative invites residents to explore their surroundings, educate themselves about our local trees, and celebrate nature’s wonders. This is the second year that the TAC has hosted the contest, which aims to promote environmental stewardship and appreciation for the City’s trees.
