The City of Essex Junction is excited to announce that Green Up Day will take place on Saturday, May 3. This annual event encourages community members to come together and clean up their neighborhood roads, parks, and waterways.
To support this effort, the City has Green Up Day bags available at Essex Junction Recreation and Parks (EJRP), the Brownell Library, and the City Office, currently located in the white Senior Center building at 2 Lincoln St. Volunteers can pick up bags during EJRP and City Office hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
On Green Up Day, volunteers can bring their full Green Up Day bags to the Brownell Library parking lot and place them in a Public Works dump truck from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If volunteers are unable to make it to the Brownell Library, they can also leave their bags on the side of the road.
This year, the City is encouraging volunteers to share their plans for Green Up Day and the great work they accomplish with the City. The City will publicize where and when groups will pick up to inspire others to join their clean-up efforts. Groups are also asked to share their collection statistics, including the number of volunteers, miles of roads cleaned, and bags of trash collected, to help report progress to the Green Up Day organizers.
Volunteers are reminded to close their Green Up Day bag when full, wear long pants and boots, and apply bug spray. Always work facing oncoming traffic and wear gloves. Do not pick up needles or hazardous waste. If volunteers encounter any needles, they should contact the Essex Police Department at 802-878-8331, and they will handle the pickup. For hazardous materials, volunteers can reach out to the Chittenden Solid Waste District Facilities at 802-872-8100 for information on where to drop them off.
